From 1994 until 2008, I was involved in some capacity at WHRW-FM, the largest alternative media outlet in the Binghamton, NY area. At the time, WHRW was jointly operated by The State University of New York and non-University broadcasters from the area. In 2007 a management change saw WHRW move toward a more mainstream route, alienating some long-time broadcasters and firing others. Nonetheless, WHRW was a bastion of free expression and alternative media for more than 40 years in the area, and for more than ten years, I consider myself to have been a prime mover in that mission.
In my time at WHRW, I was a longtime member of The Mad Trivia Party, first as a panelist, then host. I stepped down in 2002, and was again offered the host spot in 2007, which I held until my departure.
I was a longtime user of WHRW's production studio, called Control Room 2, in which I produced various imaging for WHRW, imaging for Mad Trivia, and full albums, including Felix Culpa, Angry Brick's Stereo Demonstration Record, and some of the basic tracks for Don't Wait.
As WHRW's Technical Director for four years, I implemented a lot of improvements at the station, including moving the station to a custom-designed digital delivery system for imaging and breaks, retiring some of the longest-used "cart machines" in the industry. I brought computer-based editing to Control Room 2 in 1998, and implemented WHRW's first ilive internet stream, long-requested by WHRW's alumni, who are scattered across the world. I was also a sort of historian for the organization, performing archival and document management services. At one point I began rolling it into a website, which was cancelled in 2008 as the new management was unfortunately not interested in continuing the project.
To this day, my work is influenced and energized by the all the successes I enjoyed at WHRW.
